  • While you're listening, let me tell you about the band, Wizard Coyotes. Over the last several years, we've been having these improvisational jazz jams here, at the studio. A very unique sound has emerged, and we now call it Wizard Coyotes.
  • The group consists of Denny Skerrett on Soprano, Alto, or Tenor Sax, Shelton Skerrett on Guitar, Dion Pierre on Upright Bass, and Frank Kincel, or Kevin O'Day on Drums.

All these jams are totally improvised, with no sketches, or any preconceived notions, but they all seem to come together with a great deal of focus and sensitivity...a nice chemistry between this group of players.

But when we get together for these improv gigs, we call ourselves the Wizard Coyotes, after a story I made up at a bonfire out near Grand Couteau, about 15 miles north of Lafayette. There really was a pack of coyotes that would come north to south down the Carencro Bayou every night, at that time, and would come through a break in the fence line and cross this property where we were having the bonfire. As they approached, you could hear them yipping in the distance, getting closer and closer. But when they realized we were there having this bonfire, they all split up and went silent. So, meanwhile, I'm making up this story about the "Wizard Coyotes" who could change shape and form. And as they were passing us, we would hear, sporadically, a little yip once in a while, down in the gully, where the bayou (actually just a coulee) ran, and also a little yip yip up the hill from where we were. Well right when I got to the point in the story about them changing shape, a rooster crowed very near to where we were, just across the bayou. It was right on cue! And I explained that these wizard coyotes as they changed, could be a rooster, or even a person..."In fact, you might be talking to one right now!" So, since the music we're playing is constantly morphing, and changing form, I figured Wizard Coyotes would be a good name for this group, when we're doing these improv gigs.
  • Lately, you might be able to catch us performing in Lafayette, at Bisbano's Cellar Bar. If you would like to be informed of our performance schedule, please click on the contact link at the bottom of this page, and send us an e-mail. We'd be happy to add you to our e-mail list.
